On Interstate highways Michigan applies the federal baseline: 20,000 lb single axle, 34,000 lb tandem and 80,000 lb gross. Off the Interstate system Michigan is unusual — axle loads are governed by inter-axle spacing (18,000 lb at 9+ feet, 13,000 lb at 3.5–9 feet, 9,000 lb below 3.5 feet), which is how the state permits its very high multi-axle gross weights.
